When Mumbai City FC take on FC Goa in the Indian Super League, they have always produced exciting games, making it a blossoming rivalry. On Wednesday evening though, it will be an extra special occasion for a number of key personnel.

Mumbai City head coach Sergio Lobera, midfielder Hugo Boumous, and defenders Mandar Rao Desai and Mourtada Fall signed for the club from FC Goa ahead of ISL 2020-21.

However, Frenchman Boumous, who spent two and a half seasons with FC Goa, is not dwelling too much on the reunion with his former club, for which he played 42 matches. He had 16 goals and 17 assists.

“Of course, I will play against my former team-mates tomorrow but that is the past now. I want to focus on the current season with Mumbai and want to do well with them,” Boumous told the media ahead of the clash.

For Sergio Lobera, who was at the helm at FC Goa for three seasons and won the 2019 Super Cup with them, it is a more momentous occasion, but he knows there is a job at hand.

“It is a special game for me. We achieved a lot together and I played with a young team, many of whom went on to play for India. But we need to compete well to win,” stated Lobera.

Mumbai City FC began their ISL 2020-21 campaign with a narrow 1-0 loss against NorthEast United FC, with Mumbai City being stymied by their rivals’ solid defensive shape.

They also played the second half with a man down after Ahmed Jahouh was sent off. However, Lobera felt there were a few positives from the game.

“We may not have had any shots on target, but we played the most number of passes and Farukh Choudhary and Sarthak Golui both had good chances in the game. I’m proud of my players,” said Lobera.

“I think I have the players needed for my style of play and obviously, I need time to implement it. We need to improve and learn from the last game,” Lobera declared.

Meanwhile, Jahouh will serve an automatic one-game suspension following his sending-off on Saturday.
